The Maui County Council, Boy Scouts of America seeks girls and boys in kindergarten through fifth grade into its Cub Scouts program.

“This fall is historic in that we are welcoming girls alongside the boys in being part of Cub Scouts program,” said Scout Executive Duc Button. “It is the first time that entire families will be able to be part of Cub Scouts.”

The Boy Scouts of America, the national organization, announced in October 2017 that it will admit girls into Cub Scouts beginning in 2018 and establish a new program for older girls based on the Boy Scouts’ curriculum that enables them to aspire to the coveted Eagle Scout rank.

The program for older girls will start in February 2019 and will enable girls to earn the Eagle Scout rank.

“We’ve got a lot enthusiasm and excitement from our current scouting members who have female siblings,” Button said, “and from some parents, fathers especially who have a scouting background and who want to share that experience with their daughters and who may not have sons.”

The council officially began in 1920, growing from its first Boy Scouts’ troop organized in 1911 at Paia Roman Catholic Church, according to the organization’s history. The organization has over 800 youth members and over 450 adult volunteers in Maui County.
