Maui Motorcycle Accident Claims Life of Haʻikū Man

Haʻikū man suffered fatal injuries in a motorcycle crash on the Haleakalā Highway on Friday afternoon. 

The accident was reported at 12:14 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14, 2018 at the intersection of Haleakalā Highway (377) and Haleakalā Crater Road (378).

Police say the crash occurred as a yellow and black 2004 Suzuki 650cc Dual Sport motorcycle, traveling south on Haleakalā Highway, crossed left of center and collided into a metal sign post located within the center grass island at the intersection of Haleakalā Crater Road.

The operator of the motorcycle has since been identified, following the notification of next of kin, as David T. Garrett, 56, of Haʻikū.  Police say he died at the scene.

Police say the involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing.

This was the 13th traffic fatality on Maui County roadways in 2018, compared to seven the same time last year.
