Former Maui Police Captain Sentenced to Probation
Former Maui Police Captain, Stephen Orikasa was sentenced on Tuesday to one year probation for a misdemeanor fourth degree sex assault charge.
Court records show that Orikasa entered a guilty plea in July, 2018.
In Tuesday’s proceedings, the attorney for the prosecution read the victim’s statement to the court. Judge Peter Cahill handed down the sentence, which includes participation in the Hawaiʻi Sex Offender Treatment Program.
The charges stem from a complaint filed by one of his female sergeants.
In response to Maui Now’s request for comment, Lt. Gregg Okamoto said the female sergeant was not removed from her position, and that it was her choice to move to another district.
Lt. Okamoto, who serves as the Public Information Officer for the department said Orikasa chose to resign from the Department, and that the Department “had no say in his decision.”
Also, as part of his sentence, Orikasa is prohibited from contacting and fraternizing with any police officer that is not retired; and is not to attend any activities with any police officers. Upon receipt of any contact, he to advise them that he is under Court order to not contact or fraternize with them. Orikasa was also ordered to provide his cell phone records to the Adult Client Services Branch for monitoring compliance with the Court’s order.
