Kāʻanapali Beach Hotel Receives Cultural Preservation Award

The Kāʻanapali Beach Hotel received the Pūlamahia award at the Hawaiʻi Lodging and Tourism Associationʻs 29th annual Nā Poʻe Paʻahana award ceremony. Nearly a thousand employees, family members, and industry representatives from throughout the state gathered for the ceremony.

The Pūlamahia award, which the HLTA added to the ceremony this year, recognizes an organization that cherishes the Native Hawaiian culture. According to HTLA, he Kāʻanapali Beach Hotel earned the award based on their efforts to preserve the Hawaiian culture among their staff and guests.

The hotel has numerous cultural classes for visitors to fully immerse themselves in Hawaiian traditions. These classes include kukui nut bracelet making, ukulele lessons, language sessions, and lauhala weaving.

In 2018, Kāʻanapali Beach Hotel introduced the first Ola i Ka Pū Hala Weaving Conference, where master weavers from all over Hawaiʻi gathered to share their expertise with registrants and fellow artisans. Each November, the hotel hosts Hula O Nā Keiki, a children’s solo hula competition that features entrants from around the world.

“We are delighted to receive HTLA’s Inaugural Pūlamahia award,” Kāʻanapali Beach Hotel general manager Mike White said. “This accolade is yet another acknowledgement of our efforts to honor and preserve Hawaiian culture. I would like to congratulate each member of the Kāʻanapali Beach Hotel team and am so proud of what our dedicated staff has accomplished.”

Recipients of HLTA’s awards are selected through nominations from their peers, supervisors, and co-workers. HTLA judges the nominations based on their service to guests, co-workers, and the community.
