The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for the island of Maui until 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2019.
The NWS says that at 8:08 a.m. radar indicated a swath of moderate to heavy rain moving over Maui from the south. “Rainfall rates between 1 and 2 inches per hour can be expected in the areas of heaviest rain through mid-morning,” according to the advisory.
The public is reminded to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. “Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.”
Motorists and pedestrians are reminded not to cross fast flowing or rising water in their vehicle or on
foot. “Turn around, don’t drown,” NWS forecasters advise.
This advisory may need to be extended beyond 11:15 a.m. if heavy rain persists.
A flash flood watch is also in effect through this afternoon.
