UPDATE: Fire Causes Extensive Damage to Kīhei Building
Maui firefighters were called to reports of a structure fire on Humupea Place in Kīhei at 2:14 p.m. on Monday, March 4, 2019.
Firefighters from Kīhei, Wailea and Kahului responded.
Upon arrival, crews found a fire on the exterior of an ‘ohana unit which had extended to the interior.
At that time, firefighters made entry into the home to contain and extinguish the fire as well as to assure there were no occupants inside.
The fire was officially declared
contained at 2:30 p.m. and extinguished at 3:10 p.m.
There was extensive smoke and fire damage to the unit and the Red Cross is assisting those displaced.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of this fire is still being investigated. A damage estimate is also unavailable at this time.
The American Red Cross volunteers reported earlier that the fire caused minor damage to the building.
Red Cross disaster volunteers have met with with affected residents to ensure their immediate emergency needs for food, shelter and clothing are met.
Caseworkers will continue to follow up with anyone affected in the coming weeks to provide referrals, guidance or additional assistance as needed to help with the recovery process.
