Applications are now being accepted for the Nā Hua Hoʻohuli i ka Pono service-learning program, which aims to help develop Maui’s next generation of conservation leaders. The programʻs Hoʻoilo 2019 to 2020 term will run from October 14, 2019 to June 06, 2019, for 19 hours each week. Participants will earn a bi-weekly living allowance of $475 and are eligible to earn two AmeriCorps Education Awards totalling $2,579 that can be used towards higher education costs or student loans.

According to program manager Serena P. Kaldi, Nā Hua Hoʻohuli i ka Pono honors the intrinsic relationship we as humans have with the ʻāina around us through dedicated service and mentorship to protect it for future generations. Since most of the term falls within the Hoʻoilo season, the name of the term is intended to honor this connection and our sense of place here on Maui. The host agencies for this term include the Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife, Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project, Maui Nui Botanical Gardens, and The Nature Conservancy.

Conservation Leader Assistant positions are also available for college-level students who are interested in pursuing a career in conservation. The position will involve working with all four host agencies and learning about how to manage a quality environmental education program.

Applicants will be selected through a competitive process, which includes a formal application, criminal history check, and an interview. Members are responsible for their own transportation and housing accommodations. Completed applications and all required documents must be received by 4 p.m. on Monday June 10, 2019.
