Maui County Mayor Michael Victorino answers some of the most-asked questions submitted to his staff.

Q:  When will the county fix the access at Papalaua Beach? It’s extremely dangerous due to erosion and vehicles are in danger when they enter and exit. This problem has been going on for two years now. As you may know, this is an extremely popular beach for families and we don’t want to see them get hurt.

A:  Thank you for bringing this issue to my attention and I can tell you that our Department of Parks and Recreation directed staff to inspect Papalaua Wayside Park for dangerous conditions.

Parks staff took photos of the area and Honoapiʻilani Highway, which appears to be slowly eroding due to high tides and sea level rise. Because this highway is under the state Department of Transportation’s jurisdiction, we contacted their staff about any planned repairs for the area.

I’m glad to say that state DOT maintenance crews have since filled in the area with rock and gravel.
