Maui Family Dojo Unveils New Home in Central Maui
Maui Family Dojo, offering martial arts, leadership and fitness programs to keiki and adults, is opening the doors on a brand new space. Housed at Ho’omana Barbell Gym since 2016, leaders are excited to announce their very own dojo at the Waiehu Beach Center (270 Waiehu Beach Rd.), opening May 1, with a celebration planned for Saturday, May 4 to include class demos, board breaks and program specials.
Led by instructor Shane Winans, a 3rd-degree Black Belt with more than 15 years experience in Songahm Taekwondo, Maui Family Dojo offers three empowering programs. ATA Tiny Tigers, designed for children ages three to six, has fun, active classes that encourage not only Taekwondo skill and form, but also character qualities like courtesy, respect and discipline.
“We love seeing the young ones grow with a sense of positive purpose and pride,” says Winans. “We mix in play with form, so they’re having fun and staying engaged while they’re learning. We also reward them with collectible animal patches and stars as they accomplish more and more!”
ATA Karate for Kids, for ages seven to 12, builds on those values to help shape exceptional leaders and teach life skills like confidence, self-control, honor, integrity, goal-setting and the power of a positive mental attitude.
There’s also ATA for Adults, customized to incorporate martial arts into a high-intensity fitness, self-defense and overall wellness regimen.
“Learning never stops as we grow,” Winans explains, “and our adults really benefit from a renewed feeling of strength, self-confidence and community as they make health living a priority and learn some incredible new skills!!”
Classes are available on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays in the new space between 3:30 and 8 p.m. There’s also Maui Family ATA dojo in Hali’imaile for upcountry folks, who unite with Wailuku students for belt testing every few months. Visit the Maui Family Dojo website to learn more about the programs and philosophies.
Maui Family Dojo welcomes the community to visit their new space on Saturday, May 4th between 5 and 8 p.m. Leaders will give tours and answer questions, while students demonstrate aspects of classes like fun Taekwondo activities, martial arts moves and board breaks. They are currently offering a three-class free trial, along with a free uniform for those who sign up!
Maui Family Dojo & Maui Family ATA are the only ones in Hawai’i licensed with ATA International, which began in 1969 and remains the world’s largest organization dedicated to teaching martial arts to the entire family. This connects students and instructors to a global community, with access to national and international tournaments, while maintaining the highest-quality martial arts curriculum available.
