Maui Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce Meeting, June 12

The Maui Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at the Leis Family Class Act Restaurant at UHMC.

Teri Freitas Gorman, outgoing president of the Maui Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce, will be the featured speaker at the group’s annual meeting. Gorman was elected to serve a two-year term for the MNHCC in 2016.

Teri Freitas Gorman was born in Wailuku, Maui when Hawaiʻi was still a territory. She has more than two decades of executive experience in marketing, communications and community engagement. She has held leadership positions in nonprofits, small businesses, quasi-governmental entities and a publicly owned corporation.

Her executive career launched in 1990 as the first Director of Marketing for the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. She later served in similar roles for New Zealand’s largest arts and entertainment center, the Aotea Centre in Auckland, and as VP External Affairs for the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

She returned to Maui in 2005 and served as VP Corporate Communications for and Maui Land & Pineapple Company, Inc.

After eight years of self-employment, she joined Hawaiʻi’s first licensed medical cannabis dispensary, Maui Grown Therapies, as Director of Community Relations & Patient Affairs in 2016. Every fall for the past 14 years, she has taught communications for the First Nations Futures Fellowship Program at Stanford University. She is a UCLA graduate and student of all things Brazil.

In 2016 Teri Freitas Gorman was elected to serve a two-year term as MNHCoC president but when the vice-president resigned suddenly to care for a family member, she agreed to serve a third year. Under her leadership, the MNHCoC entered into a memorandum of agreement with the state’s other Native Hawaiian chambers.

As immediate past-president, she will continue to lead the new statewide collaboration. Her Annual Meeting presentation is titled: “Business Lessons Learned from Hawaiʻi Nei.”

“It’s been an honor and a privilege to serve as president of this inspirational and dedicated organization,” said Gorman. “Our chamber is powered 100% by volunteers, so our community service comes right from the heart. We are deeply grateful to our founders whose vision motivates us to move forward. I am blessed to have worked with one of the most devoted board of directors in Hawaiʻi.”

No-host cocktails and networking will begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by a Hawaiian dinner buffet at 6 p.m.
