A two-year-old girl died after being pulled from waters at  Hālawa, Molokaʻi on Sunday morning, fire officials said.

The incident was reported at 11:58 a.m. on Sunday, June 30, 2019.

Maui Police Lieutenant Gregg Okamoto tells Maui Now that the child was swimming in the river at Hālawa Valley when she became unresponsive.

Police say the child was pulled from the water by family members and life-saving measures were attempted.

Fire officials say personnel from Engine 12 responded to the scene and performed CPR.  Crews assisted medics with transport of the patient to the Molokaʻi General Hospital where the girl was pronounced dead, according to department reports.

The events leading up to the incident are unknown. Crews left the scene at 1:23 p.m.

Police say they do not release the names of juvenile victims.

This was the second of two water deaths reported in Maui County over the weekend. The other involved a 45-year-old Maui man who was pulled unresponsive from waters off of East Maui in Kaupō on Saturday morning, June 29, 2019.
