Body of Missing Hiker Found at Base of Maui Waterfall

The body of a missing hiker was found at the base of a waterfall in the East Maui area of Kailua, Maui police said.

The incident has been classified as an unattended death and remains under an active investigation. Police say the circumstances and cause of the man’s death are still under investigation; however, police do not suspect foul play.

Thirty-five-year-old Craig Michael Pitt was reported missing after his vehicle was found late Friday, Aug. 2, near mile 7.8 of the Hana Highway.

Search efforts by fire and police personnel began on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019 in the “Bamboo Forest” area of Hana Highway

The Police Department’s search dog, Jack, and the Fire Department’s Air 1 Helicopter were both utilized in the search.

Police say the search located the body of a Caucasian male. The remains were later positively identified as Pitt through fingerprints.

Pitt’s family has been notified and police are providing them with assistance and support during their time of need.

The Maui Police Department thanked the community for their concerns and offers of assistance.
