1,200 Maui Kids Benefit from 7th Tools for School Drive

Maui United Way’s 7th Annual Tools for School Drive to benefit children in need on Maui was the most successful to date, according to organizers.  The drive was conducted with sponsorship from HMSA and Pacific Media Group.

Requests went up by 400 with over 1,200 keiki needing supplies, according to Maui United Way. The Maui community rallied to donate items and raise funds so that over 1,214 keiki in need could have the tools they need to head back to school.

All supplies were distributed through Maui United Way’s 31 non-profit partner agencies including The Salvation Army, Maui Family Support Services and the Boys and Girls Club of Maui to name a few.

Drop off locations were set up at HMSA and Pacific Media group from June 20 to July 14 when many donations were collected. HMSA donated $2,000 and a shopping spree was held on July 16 at the Kahului Walmart.

The Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea continued their support and donated over 240 backpacks filled with supplies.

Dr. Derrick Beech who is a Cancer Treatment Specialist and new to Maui, matched HMSA’s donation of $2000 which was used to purchase backpacks.

After a final inventory of supplies, there was a shortage of 300 backpacks and Deanna Davis from Elite Pacific Properties purchased the remaining items. Jolee Correa-Tanaka, a student at Maui High School served as student coordinator for the drive.

Makana Nunes, Community Impact Coordinator for Maui United Way said, “We are overwhelmed with the generosity of our community. The 2019 Tools for School Drive was our most successful drive yet nearly tripling donations from 2015 when I came on-board. It is amazing to see our Maui businesses and families come together and give back to our keiki in need.”

Maui United Way supports 31 health and human service programs in Maui County, with more than 300 businesses contributing to their annual campaign. Maui United Way depends on the continued support of local businesses and community members to address Maui’s most vital needs. With each additional donation, MUW reports that it is “one step closer to its goal in creating a better tomorrow.”
