Maui police have launched an attempted murder investigation after a male suspect allegedly drove into a police car after officers attempted arrest him.

As of 5:15 p.m., the incident was still ongoing at the Longs Drugs in the Kehalani shopping area in Wailuku.

Police say officers in “plain clothes” from the Maui Police Department’s Crime Reduction Unit were “trying to effect a lawful arrest” on the male subject when the incident occurred.

Police say that while officers were attempting the arrest, “the male subject drove his car toward a police car striking it and nearly missing an officer who was standing next to it.”
