International Coastal Cleanup Day is Next Week!

In honor of International Coastal Cleanup Day, the Pacific Whale Foundation will be hosting several beach cleanups throughout the island. 

Communities from over 100 countries are expected to participate in debris removal efforts along their coastlines for the annual occasion.

About 70 to 90 percent of the debris found on Maui is composed of plastic. According to a press release from PWF, plastic has disastrous impacts on any and all marine life. 

Below is a list of PWF cleanups on Maui for ICCD on Sept. 21: 

Kahului Harbor (8 a.m. to 12 p.m.): The cleanup will be held from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by a free lunch. 

Lahaina Harbor (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.): Volunteers will meet at Kamehameha Iki Park at 8 a.m. before proceeding to the harbor. Lunch will be provided. 

ʻĀhihi-Kīnaʻu Natural Area Reserve (8:45 a.m. to 12 p.m.): Volunteers will hike on a trail that has no shade and runs through lava rock. Anyone hesitant about their ability to complete the hike is being asked to consider joining another cleanup. Closed-toed shoes are mandatory. Long-sleeved shirts, pants, and hats are recommended. Space is limited. 

Those planning to volunteer for any of the above cleanups are advised to wear closed-toed shoes and sun protection.
