A record high temperature of 97 degrees was documented in Kahului on Monday, Sept. 16, breaking the old record of 94 degrees set for the same day in 1996 according to data compiled by the National Weather Service.

It’s the second day in a row of record breaking heat on the Valley Isle and the fifth time this month that record breaking or record tying temperatures have been reported on Maui.  A record high temperature of 94 degrees was documented in Kahului on Sunday, Sept. 15, breaking the old record of 92 degrees set for the same day in 1977 according to the NWS.

Here on Maui, there were a total of five record setting or tying days over the month-long period (from Aug. 17 to Sept. 16), according to data compiled by the National Weather Service. This included 95 degree temperatures in Kahului on Sept. 1; 94 degrees on Sept. 15; 97 degrees on Sept. 16; 93 degrees on Sept. 9; and 92 degrees on Sept. 5, 2019.

Over the course of the last 30 days, there was only one day when temperatures did not tie or break old records in Hawaiʻi, and that was on Aug. 22, 2019.
