The Maui County Fire Department will be conducting wildland firefighting training in the Central Maui area from Sept. 30 to Oct. 7.

The training will involve live fire, so residents may see or smell smoke in the area.

According to MFD officials, the exercises are meant to provide valuable “hands-on” training for fire personnel.

The training will also reduce the brush fire hazard in the area by burning away fuel, creating a “safety buffer” in the event of an actual fire.

MFD will hold the training in a roughly 100-acre plot makai of HC&D.

The training is slated for 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the above dates but will not run on the weekend.
