An estimated 1,000 feet of unattended lay net was recovered from within Kaneʻohe Bay on Oʻahu on Sunday following a citizen complaint filed with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.

Officers from the Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement Windward Oʻahu District recovered the illegal lay net at around 10:40 a.m.

They reportedly found several dead hammerhead sharks in the net and recovered a 16-foot boat as evidence.

DOCARE officers report that unregistered, unattended, illegal lay nets continue to be a major concern, particularly on Oʻahu’s windward side.
