Today, American Red Cross volunteers are lending a helping hand to those impacted by a fire that resulted in $270,000 in damage to a Makawao home earlier this week.

Fire officials say the now displaced resident was not at home when the blaze broke out on Pau Hana Road on Wednesday evening.

The Red Cross volunteers are assisting affected residents with any needed food, shelter, and clothing.

Red Cross officials say caseworkers will continue to follow up with anyone affected in the coming weeks to provide referrals, guidance or additional assistance in the recovery process.

The Red Cross is encouraging all families to create a disaster plan that includes an evacuation procedure with two different routes of escape, a communications plan to help families reconnect after disaster and a disaster supplies kit that is readily available in a quick evacuation.
