Funds Gifted for Hawaiian Language Celebration on Molokaʻi

The Hui Mākua Pūnana Leo O Molokaʻi (the preschoolʻs parent association) just received a $4,000 grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs for its Hawaiian language and cultural festival.

Molokaʻi No Ka Heke: Kō Kākou Moʻolelo is a free community event that honors ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi Month (Hawaiian Language Month) by showcasing student work, panels, demonstrations, cultural practitioners and activities.

For 20 years, the Hui Mākua has worked to support the vision and mission of ʻAha Pūnana Leo: “E Ola Ka ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi” or “The Hawaiian Language Shall Live.”

“We are so thankful for OHA’s support of this event, because this event will bring together the
entire island in celebration of Hawaiian language and culture—featuring the ʻike (knowledge) of Molokaʻi, its keiki, and its community,” said Christopher O’Brien, board director and treasurer for Hui
Mākua Pūnana Leo O Molokaʻi.

The funding comes from OHAʻs ʻAhahui Grants program, which funds events that aim to benefit the Native Hawaiian community. The department allocated $200,000 to the program for Fiscal Year 2020.

Molokaʻi No Ka Heke: Kō Kākou Moʻolelo will be held on Feb. 22 at the Molokaʻi Community Health Center.
