Winter officially begins in Hawaii on December 21 at 6:19 p.m. This day has the least hours of sunlight of the year for the Northern Hemisphere and the most for the Southern Hemisphere. The solstice is officially at 6:19 p.m., because that’s when the Sun is directly above the Tropic of Capricorn. That day the Sun will rise at its point farthest south of east and will set at its farthest point south of west. After this day the sun will rise and set closer and closer to due east and west heading toward the equinox in late March.
