Wind gusts of up to 60 mph are forecast for the Summit of Haleakalā above the 8,000 foot elevation. The advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2019.

Sustained winds of 45 to 50 mph are expected. Forecasters with the NWS say winds this strong will making driving or walking difficult and can forcefully slam vehicle doors.

On Hawaiʻi Island, there is a wind warning in effect for the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea above the 11,000 foot elevation. Northeast to east winds of 35 to 60 mph are in the forecast, with gusts of up to 70 mph.

The NWS is asking the public to postpone travel to the Big Island summits until the winds subside.
