2020 Kahoʻolawe Trolling Dates Announced

The Kahoʻolawe Island Reserve Commission announced the trolling schedule (for permitted vessels only) on Thursday.
The trolling times run from 12:01 a.m on Saturdays to 11:59 p.m on Sundays as follows:

January 2020: 18-19; 25-26
February 2020: 08-09; 22-23
March 2020: 14-15; 21-22
April 2020: 04-05; 26-27
May 2020: 02-03; 16-17
June 2020: 06-07; 20-21
July 2020: 11-12; 25-26
August 2020: 08-09; 15-16
September 2020: 12-13; 26-27
October 2020: 10-11; 24-25
November 2020: 07-08; 21-22
December 2020: 05-06; 19-20
Hawai ‘i Administrative Rules (HAR 13-261) require that all vessels must register annually with the KIRC before entering the reserve to troll during designated trolling dates.
Registered vessels are also required to file a catch report with the KIRC any time they fish in the reserve, whether fish are caught or not. A $25 permitting fee will be applied to the required registration process.
Access to the Kaho’olawe Island Reserve waters is highly restricted because of the continued presence of unexploded ordnance, as well as for the protection of marine resources within the Reserve.
However, during two scheduled weekends each month, limited trolling is allowed in Reserve waters deeper than 30 fathoms for vessels permitted by the KIRC. “Reserve waters” are defined as within two nautical miles of Kaho’olawe Island. All other fishing, ocean recreation, commercial and/or any other activities are strictly prohibited.
