Warning: 10-15 Foot Surf for East Shores of Maui and Moloka‘i
Surf of 10 to 15 feet is in the forecast for the east shores of Maui and Molokaʻi, prompting a high surf warning until 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020.
Surf is expected to lower below working levels on Sunday to 8 to 12 feet.
A High Surf Warning means that dangerous, battering waves will pound the shoreline, resulting in very dangerous swimming conditions and deadly rip currents.
The National Weather Service says: “Strong to gale force trade winds near and upstream of the Islands will produce large rough surf along east facing shores into early next week. The combination of the large surf, strong onshore winds, high astronomical tides, and elevated ocean water levels will produce wave run up and localized coastal erosion along east facing shores during the next few days.”
The NWS advises inexperienced individuals to remain off beaches and adjacent beachfront areas impacted by large breaking surf.
