UPDATE: Power Restored to 200 Customers in East Maui

Power is now restored to all customers in the East Maui area, according to an update issued by Hawaiian Electric.

The outage occurred after a large tree fell and pinned down power lines off of Hāna Highway on Sunday.  The incident knocked out power to an estimated 200 customers.

Crews removed the tree and made repairs to restore power around 12:10 p.m. today.

Customers still experiencing an outage, are asked to contact the company’s Trouble Line at (808) 871-7777.

Hawaiian Electric crews continue work to restore power to the East Maui community of Hāna.

During a period of gusty winds and rain at around 11 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2020, about 200 customers in parts of East Maui, including Keʻanae, Lower Nāhiku, Nāhiku Homesteads and parts of Hāna, experienced an overnight outage.

A company spokesperson said a large tree fell and pinned down a span of power lines off of Hāna Highway.

Parts of Hāna, including Hāna School, had power restored at around 9:15 p.m. last night after crews were able to reroute power.  The Department of Education issued a notice last night that the school would be closed for Monday, Jan. 13, 2020 because of the outages.

Crews are currently on scene removing the tree and working to restore power to all customers, including the Hāna Airport, by noon today.
