The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory and a wind warning for Haleakalā summit beginning tonight.

According to the NWS, the winter weather advisory will begin at midnight tonight and continue through 6 p.m. on Monday, while the wind warning is set for 6 p.m. this evening until 6 a.m. on Monday.

The NWS issues a winter weather advisory when periods of snow, sleet, or freezing rain is expected to cause travel difficulties.

“Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities and use caution while driving,” a NWS announcement read.

NWS officials say snow could build up 1 to 3 inches on the ground and west winds could reach 35 mph to 50 mph with localized gusts over 75 mph.

The NWS is urging the public to avoid traveling to the summit until winds have subsided.
