County Recycling Centers are open and have added the following safety measures due to COVID-19:

  • The public is advised that if you or someone in your home has tested positive for the coronavirus, do not recycle your recyclables; place them in a bag that is securely closed and discard them in your trash container. This also applies to any used cleaning supplies, paper towels, tissues, or personal protective equipment (PPE) generated within a home or business with someone who has tested positive.
  • Hand washing stations are available for staff and public
  • Recycling “sorting” barrels are disinfected after each use
  • Customers are asked to keep a safe distance of at least six feet between each other
  • Operators highly recommend that customers wear a mask and gloves while recycling and redeeming HI-5 bottles and cans
  • Staff wear masks when interacting with the public
  • The large “dropbox” bins (for cardboard, newspaper, plastic bottles # 1 and #2, and glass bottles and jars) are disinfected intermittently throughout the day
  • Recyclables need to be dry and free of food. Be sure to reduce waste by using all the product in the container, then lightly rinse and recycle it.

The hours of operation vary for each site:

  • Kīhei HI-5: open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.: recycling is open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Makawao HI-5: open Wednesday to Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; recycling is open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
