Memorial Day services at Makawao Veterans Cemetery will be virtual this year, according to Maui Mayor Michael Victorino.

Mayor Victorino said flags will still be placed on graves, but the traditional live ceremony and flower drop will not happen as many of those who usually attend are senior and elders who are at higher risk of impacts from the ongoing pandemic.

According to the mayor, a virtual announcement will be made honoring the 69 fallen individuals that passed over the course of the last year.

The cemetery itself will be open for families to honor their loved ones, but they are reminded of social distancing recommendations.

Mayor Victorino plans to announce further details at his daily press conference on Friday afternoon.
