The Credit Unions of Maui made a $7,500 donation to the Maui Food Bank this week to help provide food for those in need throughout Maui County.

“With one in three Maui residents currently unemployed, the Credit Unions of Maui felt the need to come together to support our Maui community in a way that would make a greater impact collectively than what each credit union could do individually,” said Credit Unions of Maui Chapter President, Clayton Fuchigami.

“Numerous deserving nonprofits were discussed, but we thought that we could do the most good by donating to the Maui Food Bank at this time. We hope that this gift will help inspire others to continue doing whatever they can to help those in our community who are in need,” said Fuchigami.

Maui Food Bank Executive Director, Richard Yust, said food insecurity continues to be a dire need for many residents, now more than ever.  “Currently, food is distributed to those in need as quickly as it comes into the warehouse. Because of the pandemic, we have seen a decline in donations from grocery stores and food drives at businesses, so monetary donations are vitally important right now. We are grateful to the Credit Unions of Maui for their generosity and will use this $7,500 donation to provide over 10,000 meals to those in need of hunger relief,” said Yust.

Individuals can help stock the Maui Food Bank’s empty shelves by making a donation online at mauifoodbank.org or holding a virtual food drive mauifoodbank.org/hold-virtual-food-drive/.

The Credit Unions of Maui is the Valley Isle chapter of the Hawaii Credit Union League and is comprised of Kahului Federal Credit Union (FCU), Maui FCU, Maui County FCU, Maui Teachers FCU, Valley Isle FCU, and Wailuku FCU.
