Mayor Victorino announces First Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Michael Kagami

Mayor Michael Victorino announced today that Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Michael Kagami has been appointed as First Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in the Department of the Prosecuting Attorney.

He will serve under acting Prosecuting Attorney Andrew Martin, who was appointed last week. His appointment is subject to confirmation by the Maui County Council.

“Mr. Kagami has more than two decades of experience as a criminal prosecutor, with his last two and a half years of service coming as a deputy prosecuting attorney with Maui County,” Mayor Victorino said. “He worked three and a half years with the state Department of the Attorney General and 20 years with Hawaiʻi County. I’m confident he will be a strong second-in-command for the Department of the Prosecuting Attorney and help keep our community safe with our partners in law enforcement.”

Kagami served as supervisory prosecutor for 15 years while with Hawaiʻi County, overseeing felony trial and screening units. He has prosecuted cases involving homicides, sexual assault, violent crime and property crimes. 

“Prosecuting criminal offenders is my life’s work,” Kagami said. “I am so thankful that two and a half years ago I was able to come and work with the dedicated staff at the Maui Prosecutor’s Office. I am now grateful for the opportunity to continuing to work for the people of Maui County in a new capacity.”

Kagami is a 1990 graduate of the University of Hawaiʻi William S. Richardson School of Law. He also holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Hawaiʻi.
