The Maui County Composite Squadron, local unit of Civil Air Patrol, brought its award-winning Aerospace Education curriculum to Sacred Heart Middle School 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.

Squadron Commander and Aerospace Education Officer Lieutenant Darryl Ng presented an introductory science course teaching youth about some basic laws of physics and how they apply to aircraft and flying.

“It’s so great to see the look of wonder in a young person’s eyes when they realize for the first time that flying isn’t something simple or mysterious” said Commander Ng, “It just takes the knowledge of magic that we call physics.”

Principal Tonata Lolesio agreed by saying “Commander Ng’s presentation prompted questions and a high level of interest in learning more about aerodynamics and the CAP cadet program.” She further went on to state that “Sacred Hearts School looks forward to the possibility of launching a cadet program for West Maui youth in the 2021-2022 school year.”

Aerospace Education is one of the primary missions of Civil Air Patrol with classes being offered to schools throughout Maui.

The Maui County Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol offers Aerospace courses, teacher training, and encourages educators to join as Aerospace Education Members. As a member, educators get access to Civil Air Patrol’s vast curriculum of Aerospace, STEM, and Cyber training as well as access to free STEM kits provided by the organization.

The Maui Squadron offers a youth program for kids ages 12-18 who are interested in Flying, Aerospace, STEM, Emergency Services, and Leadership.

The squadron also offers membership for adults interested in volunteer Emergency Services as well as teachers interested in bringing Aerospace & STEM education to their classrooms.

Civil Air Patrol is a non-profit 501c3 organization tasked by the US congress to run programs to keep America at the forefront of advanced Air & Space technology through it’s three missions of Cadet Programs, Emergency Services, and Aerospace / STEM education.
