Detailed Forecast

Synopsis

Fresh to locally strong trade winds will continue through early next week. A band of clouds and showers mainly north of the state will support wet conditions over windward Kauai through early Saturday while a gradual drying trend can be expected elsewhere through the weekend.

Discussion

Fresh to locally strong trade winds will continue through early next week as a broad area of high pressure sets up north of the state. A band of clouds and showers associated with an old front will support wet conditions over Kauai, particularly the windward section, through Friday. The remaining islands will get scattered windward showers carrying in with the trade winds and tonight. Isolated showers will blow over the smaller islands at times.
Regional model analyses and the CIMMS MIMIC PWAT product indicate a drier airmass extending from about 152W, east of the Big Island, to the Southern California/Baja coast. Trades will advect this airmass across the state, reaching the Big Island early Friday morning, the central portion of the state by late Friday and Kauai by Saturday morning. Expect the drier weather to continue through the weekend into early next week.
Trades will begin to weaken and veer east southeasterly during the first half of next week as ridging runs its course and a fresh round of height falls over the north Pacific gets underway.

Aviation

Moderate trade wind flow will continue to steer bands of low topped cumulus towards the Hawaiian Islands. Showers will impact mainly north and east facing slopes and coasts. Isolated spillover showers are to be expected across leeward portions of the smaller islands, especially in the late night and morning hours. Brief MVFR CIG or VIS is to be expected in showers most areas.
The remnants of a dead cold front remain draped over Kauai and are expected to linger overnight. AIRMET Sierra for mountain obscuration across Windward Kauai has been cancelled, but widespread MVFR conditions could redevelop after sunset.
Afternoon sea breezes are driving inland cumulus development across the lower slopes of the Big Island. These sea breezes will weaken and give way to land breezes by late this evening. This will have a clearing effect across leeward areas. Most south and west facing slopes of the Big Island will be cloud free by morning.

Marine

Developing high far north of the state will strengthen trade winds to moderate to locally strong tonight and tomorrow then hold through the weekend. A Small Craft Advisory (SCA) is in effect for waters northwest and lee of Kauai, and the windier waters around Maui County and south of the Big Island through early morning. This SCA will likely continue for the typically windier waters through the weekend.
A moderate north to northeast swell will subside tonight and tomorrow. The first of several small to moderate reinforcing northwest swells will fill in tomorrow keeping small to moderate surf along north and west facing shores through early next week. Expect small to moderate east facing shores surf as the current north to northeast swell fades and a building trade wind swell fills in tomorrow and holds through the weekend.

HFO Watches/Warnings/Advisories
