Lānaʻi Destination Management Action Plan – Fall 2021 Progress Report

The Hawai‘i Tourism Authority provided a second update on its progress toward fulfilling the Lāna‘i Destination Management Action Plan or DMAP, which is a part of the Maui Nui DMAP document.

The document aims to rebuild, redefine and reset the direction of tourism over a three-year period. The DMAP was approved by HTA’s board of directors in January 2021 and released to the public and published on HTA’s website on March 4, 2021.

This update focuses on the Lāna‘i actions identified for Phase 1 (calendar year 2021) implementation. There are 23 sub-actions in Phase 1, of which 18 (78%) are in progress, four are on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and one has been completed as of Nov. 16, 2021. In addition, two sub-actions identified to start in Phase 2 are currently being addressed in Phase 1, of which one has been completed.

Highlights of Lāna‘i DMAP Sub-Actions In Progress 

• Maui Visitors and Convention Bureau formed the Lāna‘i Advisory Board and conducted a meeting on Oct. 25, 2021. The purpose of this board is to guide messaging and day-trip itineraries. (E.1, E.2, F.1, F.3, F.4, F.6, G.2)
• The Mālama Maui County Pledge video (posted belowO is being played on the Maui – Lāna‘i passenger ferry, Expeditions, which transports more than 200,000 passengers between the islands each year. The video asks visitors to acknowledge, protect, respect, and learn about the islands’ culture, natural resources, and community during their stay. (F.2)
• RFPs were issued for the Kūkulu Ola, Aloha ‘Āina and Community Enrichment programs.

The HTA thanked the County of Maui’s Office of Economic Development, Office of the Mayor’s Community Liaison for tourism and natural resources, and the Maui Visitors and Convention Bureau for their support and partnership in moving the Maui Nui DMAP actions forward for Lāna‘i.

HTA also acknowledged the other state, county and federal agencies, nonprofit organizations, and the visitor industry which it says have been integral to advancing the DMAP efforts.
