Update: Multiple Molokaʻi schools will be closed Monday due to severe weather

All Moloka‘i schools and Hanalei Elementary to reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 31
Update: 4:42 p.m. Monday, Jan. 30, 2023

All public schools on Moloka’i will be reopening to students and staff on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Much of the road debris from the flooding has been cleared and school bus services will be operational.

Hanalei Elementary School on Kaua‘i is also scheduled to reopen to students and staff on Tuesday, Jan. 31 with the reopening of the Hanalei Bridge on Kūhiō Highway.

The Hawai‘i State Department of Education’s five public schools on Moloka‘i will be closed for students and staff on Monday, Jan. 30, due to impacts from severe weather.

Parts of the island experienced flooding from heavy rains, which has caused unsafe conditions and is preventing access to some of the campuses. Contracted bus service has also been temporarily canceled.

Schools are alerting their school communities. The situation will be reevaluated tomorrow to determine if the schools can safely resume operations Tuesday.

The impacted schools are:

  • Kaunakakai Elementary
  • Kilohana Elementary
  • Maunaloa Elementary
  • Moloka‘i Middle
  • Moloka‘i High

The closures do not apply to charter schools or other educational institutions outside of the HIDOE’s jurisdiction. All other HIDOE schools remain open at this time.

  • Kualapuʻu Public Charter School on Molokaʻi will be closed on Monday, January 30 due to the impacts of the recent severe weather.

The heavy rains and flooding caused hazardous road conditions impacting school bus operations and motorists.

Kualapuʻu school officials have notified their school community about the closure. A follow-up notification will be sent to families when the school reopens.
