Bicyclist suffers critical life-threatening injuries in Honoapiʻilani crash on Maui

UPDATE: (8:45 p.m., March 11, 2023)

A 67-year-old Kīhei man suffered critical, life-threatening injuries when he was struck by a vehicle while bicycling along the Honoapiʻilani Highway on Saturday afternoon. Police say a preliminary investigation reveals the bicyclist was traveling westbound on the shoulder, made a left into the roadway where he was struck by a black 2020 Nissan Maxima sedan, which was traveling westbound. The Honoapiʻilani Highway is now open in both directions. It will take some time before traffic resumes its normal flow. The highway was closed for several hours since around 1:30 p.m. following a motor vehicle accident near Mile 8.5.

Honoapiʻilani Highway is closed at Mile 8.5 due to motor vehicle accident. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. There is no estimated time on when the highway will be reopened.
