Update: Kula brush fire possibly ignited by vehicle exhaust, one man injured
Update:
A 30-year-old man suffered burns to his leg during a brush fire in Kula, fire officials said. The man was transported by Medics to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment.
Fire officials say the cause of the fire was accidental and was possibly ignited by a vehicle’s exhaust making contact with dry brush.
The fire was first reported at 11:23 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 23, 2023 on Pūlehunui Road.
Fire crews arrived on scene to find a working brush fire with strong Kona winds present blowing at around 20 mph from the south. Personnel gained 100% containment of the fire at around 12:05 p.m., and had the fire extinguished by 2 p.m.
A total of 1 acre of brush burned in the fire. A vehicle was also damaged in the incident, but a dollar estimate on damages was not available at last report.
Responding units included: Engine 13, Engine 5, Engine 10, Tanker 10 and the department’s Air 1 helicopter.
