Hawaiian Airlines flight HA29 from Seattle to Maui, carrying 173 guests and six crew members, experienced an issue with its brakes upon arrival into OGG. An airline spokesperson tells Maui Now that the pilots were able to bring the aircraft to a complete stop on the runway surface, and the aircraft was towed to the gate where guests deplaned.

There are no reported injuries, according to both airline representatives and a spokesperson with the state Department of Transportation.

Hawaiian Airlines reports the aircraft is being pulled out of service for assessment. “We sincerely apologize to our guests and thank our crew for their professionalism,” said Tara Shimooka, Hawaiian Airlines spokesperson.

Earlier media outlet reports indicated the incident was a result of a plane overshooting the runway. DOT Maui Airports Manager, Marvin Moniz tells Maui Now that the airplane did not go off the runway, but stopped in the safety zone. Crews were able to conduct an inspection on site and reported no damage to the aircraft or runway.

The incident was reported at 1:37 p.m. and Runway 2/20 was reopened at 2:01 p.m, according to Moniz. One American Airlines mainland flight from Dallas to Maui was diverted to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport at Honolulu during the closure, according to the state Department of Transportation. That plane refueled and was headed back to Maui at last report.
