Maui motorcyclist fatally injured after attempting to overtake vehicle on Pūlehu Road
A 68-year-old Kīhei man suffered fatal injuries following a motorcycle collision on Pūlehu Road Thursday afternoon. Police say the man was operating a black 2012 Harley-Davidson Switchback motorcycle and was traveling northwest on Pūlehu Road when he attempted to overtake a vehicle on a double solid yellow line. The motorcyclist lost control of the motorcycle upon failing to negotiate a left curve in the roadway and drove into bushes.
As a result of the collision, the motorcyclist was ejected, suffering critical life-threatening injuries. He was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. The victim’s identity is currently being withheld pending next of kin notification.
The collision was reported at around 12:40 p.m., on Pūlehu Road, 0.2 miles southeast of Spanish Road in Kahului.
A preliminary police investigation reveals that a the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, but was wearing safety glasses. The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol is pending as the investigation is ongoing.
This was Maui County’s tenth traffic fatality of 2024, compared to seven at the same time last year.
