Maui police released information this morning on Friday nightʻs road closures and evacuations in Wailuku.

According to police, Wailuku Patrol officers located a stolen vehicle potentially linked to the Pukalani improvised explosive device (IED) incident from the previous night. The incident was reported at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9, 2024.

As a precautionary measure, nearby residences were evacuated. After a thorough investigation, the vehicle was deemed safe and unrelated to the IED case. At approximately 10:57 p.m., roadways were reopened, and residents were allowed to return to their homes.

Maui police have reopened all roads in Wailuku as of 11 p.m., after a nearly two hour closure due to a police investigation. The investigation also resulted in the evacuation of multiple streets in the area.

Due to an active Police Investigation, the following road closures are in place:

  • Mill Street is closed from Lower Main to Imi Kala
  • Imi Kala is closed from Mill Street to Eha Street
  • Eha Street is closed from Imi Kala to Iao Loop

Residents on the following streets have been evacuated:

  • Halewili Street 
  • Alako Street 
  • Ono Street
  • Ea Street
  • Wili Place
  • Mill Street between Imi Kala and Lower Main

Maui Now reached out to police to seek confirmation on the reason for the closures and evacuations. A Maui Police Department spokesperson confirmed that there is an active police investigation in the Wailuku area. Department officials were unable to share further details as of 9:30 p.m.

On Thursday, the FBI and Maui police jointly issued a public safety warning regarding recent reports of IEDs recovered in the Kahului and Pukalani areas. That was followed by a more detailed report involving an incident in Pukalani yesterday. More information is forthcoming.
