Maui Rotary clubs and friends sponsor ‘Teardrop of Lahaina’ sculpture
A new sculpture in Lahaina is providing a space for peaceful remembrance.
Maui craftsman Soakai Taufa, who just days after the wildfire began building white crosses above the Lahaina Bypass, shared his vision for a new sculpture to honor those lost in the Lahaina fires ahead of the one-year anniversary.
With the support of five Rotary clubs on Maui and numerous friends of Taufa, the funds were raised to bring the vision to life.
The 16-foot tall “Teardroop of Lahaina Sculpture” was unveiled and lit up at the memorial area above the Lahaina Bypass on Wednesday night, as Taufa surprised attendees by illuminating a heart in the middle of the sculpture filled with flowers.
“I wanted to build something for our community for the one-year anniversary of the Lahaina fires to let them know we are still here for them,” said Taufa. “To show honor and respect and give them hope, peace, comfort and encouragement.”
Taufa’s dedication in tending to and updating the memorial site months after the fires caught the attention of the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset.
Touched by his commitment, the club welcomed him as a member and provided financial support for the project.
Soakai’s efforts were recognized recently by the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset, which awarded him the “Quiet Rotarian” award for his outstanding service.
“His work on the memorial area, including the crosses and the Teardrop Sculpture, truly embodies the Rotary motto of ‘Service Above Self,'” the club reports. “Soakai’s selflessness and talent, combined with the support of the community, have created a lasting tribute to those lost in the Lahaina fires.”
