Firefighters respond to brush fire in Māʻalaea

Maui fire crews extinguished a three acre brush fire in Māʻalaea on Sunday evening at around 8 p.m. The fire was first reported at 4:43 p.m. on Sept. 29 off of the Kūihelani in the area of Old Dump.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find the fire burning in fallow agricultural lands. Kahului-bound traffic on the Kūihelani Highway was temporarily closed for a period of time to allow firefighters to work safely along the road.

Units responding to the scene included: Engine 1, Engine 10, Tanker 10, Engine 14, Tanker 14, a battalion chief, and tankers from Mahi Pono and Alpha Construction.

The fire was brought under control by 5:25 p.m. and the cause of the fire is undetermined. There were no evacuations needed and no injuries were reported.

Maui fire crews were able to contain a brush fire reported at around 5 p.m. Sunday in Māʻalaea off of the Kūihelani in the area of Old Dump. The fire burned a total of three acres at last report. Maui police were on scene to conduct traffic control on the Kūihelani Highway. Officials say no evacuations were necessary. Motorists were asked to avoid the area while crew continued extinguishment efforts.

Maui fire crews are responding to reports of a brush fire in Māʻalaea near the interaction of the Honoapiʻilani and Kūihelani highways. Motorists can expect delays in the area. Maui Now received citizen reports of heavy smoke seen in the area shortly after 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2024.
