The wildfires that destroyed much of the historic town of Lahaina in August 2023 also had a devastating impact on Maui’s thriving fine arts community, consuming numerous galleries, priceless artworks and the livelihoods of artists and gallery workers.

To honor Old Lahaina and to help support the revival of arts on the Valley Isle, the Maui Arts League has published “Remembering Lahaina: Places, People & Culture,” a collectible whose proceeds directly benefit those affected by the fires.

This large-format art book, released and distributed by Legacy Isle Publishing, is a collection of more than 250 plein air paintings by 87 professional artists, depicting Lahaina’s unique character and capturing the spirit of the old town—the sheltering mountains, bustling harbor, spectacular sunsets, and popular galleries and restaurants of Front Street.

“The project was underwritten by donations from our supporters,” said Maui Arts League president Lois Reiswig. “Sales of Remembering Lahaina are meant to raise funds for Maui’s artists and their staffs, and all net proceeds from this initial release will go to them.”

Founded in 1975, the Maui Arts League is a fine arts membership organization focused on painting, sculpture and photography. This 501(c)(3) organization is dedicated to showcasing, cultivating and building appreciation for visual fine arts, while creating opportunities for people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds to embrace the art experience.

“Remembering Lahaina: Places, People & Culture,” listed at $150, is available at mauiartsleague.org/book, through Hawaiʻi retail outlets, or direct from the publisher at www.bookshawaii.net.
