On July 19, divers and supporters will gather at the Rinzai Zen Mission at Baldwin Beach for the 3rd Annual Trucker Dukes Memorial Dive Tournament Invasive Roundup, hosted by Maui nonprofit UVSC (Us Vs. Cancer). The event raises funds for Hawaiʻi families impacted by cancer while honoring the memory of Trucker Dukes, the first recipient of UVSC’s Financial Assistance Program.

The Dukes family helps organize the tournament. “Trucker lived a really big little life,” said his mother, Shauna Dukes. “This feels like the perfect way to honor him and raise money for a good cause.”

The freedive spearfishing tournament age divisions include: 7-10 years old; 11-14 years old; and 15-18 years old. All divers must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited to 50 teams. Diver check-in opens at 6:30 a.m., followed by a safety workshop presented by Freedive Safe! Hawaiʻi at 7:15 a.m. and the dive start at 8:45 a.m. Participants must return by 11:45 a.m. for the weigh-in, awards ceremony and lunch.

This year’s event expands statewide with the introduction of an Open Division Photo Contest for the largest roi or peacock grouper (by length or weight). Divers on any island can enter by submitting a photo, with winners receiving cash and sponsor-donated prizes.

“UVSC’s Financial Assistance Program serves families throughout Hawaiʻi—not just Maui—so we wanted a fun way to include everyone,” said UVSC Executive Director Kandice Johns.

Spectators are welcome. Starting at 10 a.m., the event will feature a silent auction, keiki arts and crafts, a resource fair with educational booths, and food for purchase.
