Episode 19 of the Kīlauea Volcano eruption ends after 8 hours of activity

On May 1, 2025, USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists observed a small spatter cone that has built up within the north vent in Halemaʻumaʻu. The main fountaining of Episode 19 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption at Kīlauea has ended after just 8 hours of activity.  

The episode began at around 9:28 p.m. HST on May 1, and ended at 5:20 a.m. on May 2.  The event featured fountaining of 330 feet from the north vent, and produced just under 4 million cubic yards of lava, covering about half of the Halema’uma’u crater floor.  

The  Kīlauea Volcano Alert Level/Aviation Color Code remains at WATCH/ORANGE. All current and recent activity is within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.
