Maui Health welcomes Dr. Anna Eckart-Dodd as New Chief Medical Director

Dr. Anna Eckart-Dodd has been selected as the next Chief Medical Director for Maui Health, effective May 31, 2025.

Maui Health announced that Dr. Anna Eckart-Dodd, a dedicated Maui hospitalist, has been selected as the next Chief Medical Director for Maui Health.

“A longtime physician with Hawaiʻi Permanente Medical Group (HPMG), Dr. Eckart-Dodd’s deep connection to patients, unwavering leadership, and commitment to compassionate care make her an outstanding choice to lead this work moving forward,” according to the announcement.

She’ll officially step into the role following Dr. Micheal Shea’s announced departure from the position on May 31.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Eckart-Dodd as our new Chief Medical Director,” said Maui Health CEO Lynn Fulton. “She has a steadfast commitment to improving the health of our island communities and is dedicated to our mission of providing exceptional health care for the people we serve.”

Dr. Eckart-Dodd brings a deep understanding of patients’ needs, having served as a hospitalist at Maui Memorial Medical Center for over a decade. Widely respected for her compassion, leadership, and dedication to community health, she was also a Key Medical Director for Maui Memorial Medical Center in 2020-2021, focusing on quality.

She has been a dedicated and compassionate physician at Maui Memorial for years, and her deep connection to our patients, staff, and community will serve her well as Chief Medical Director. I have full confidence in her leadership and know she’ll continue to advance the high-quality, patient-centered care that defines Maui Health.”

A graduate of Punahou School and Brown University, Dr. Eckart-Dodd attended medical school and completed residencies in internal medicine and pediatrics at the University of Hawaiʻi, John A. Burns School of Medicine. She’s board-certified in internal medicine and was recognized with the 2021 Kaiser Permanente David Lawrence Community Service Award for her dedication to indigenous health initiatives, including coordinating COVID-19 vaccination efforts for Native Hawaiian communities on Maui and co-founding the Mālama Āina program at MMMC.

Dr. Shea will remain on staff at Maui Memorial Medical Center as a critical care physician in the intensive care unit (ICU).
