Keālia Pond Wildlife Refuge announces wildlife photography contest

The Friends of Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge, in collaboration with the refuge itself, has launched a wildlife photography contest open to photographers of all ages.

Every photographer who enters will honor their own work and help to support the conservation mission of Friends of Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge, which includes improving visitors’ experience, developing environmental and educational activities, offering volunteer assistance with refuge projects and establishing fundraising sources.

The contest invites entries in three categories, each offered in two age divisions:

ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD

Age Divisions:

  • Adults (18 and older)
  • Youth (under 18)

Photo Categories:

  • Wildlife: Includes birds, plants, and other animals or insects found in the refuge.
  • Scenic: Features landscapes, plants and geological elements. Wildlife may appear but should not be the main subject.
  • People in Action: Captures activities or objects related to conservation, habitat restoration or educational efforts at Keālia Pond. Photos of wedding parties, birthday parties or private outings are not eligible. If a person is recognizable in the photo, photographers must have their permission to share the photo.

All photographs must be taken at publicly accessible areas within Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge, including:

  • Keālia Coastal Boardwalk (North Kīhei Road)
  • Keālia Pond NWR Visitor Center (Milepost 6, Maui Veterans Highway)
  • Kanuimanu Ponds (wildlife viewing area near the Visitor Center)
