Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui Back-to-School Health Fair draws more than 450 families

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui connected more than 450 families with health and wellness resources during its annual Back-to-School Health Fair on July 24 at Queen Kaʻahumanu Center in Kahului.

The free event distributed more than 350 backpacks filled with school supplies to youth across Maui, according to the organization. Healthcare providers, youth-serving organizations and government agencies collaborated to offer families access to services ahead of the new school year.

Alyssa Nava-Vergara, community outreach liaison for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui, said the fair was designed to connect families with resources to get back to school.

“This event aimed to meet families where they’re at to help remove barriers, strengthen family support systems, and ensure our youth have access to the tools and opportunities they need to succeed,” she said.

The event was funded in part through a grant from Maui United Way as part of its Tools for School Initiative, which provides backpacks, notebooks and other supplies to Maui keiki. Makana Rosete, impact manager for Maui United Way, said the initiative reflects the organization’s partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui in supporting local families.

“Through hard work and aloha for all of our children, the Boys & Girls Clubs truly make a difference for every family they serve,” she said.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui operates eight clubhouses across Maui County, serving more than 1,400 youth through after-school programs, mentorship, academic support, leadership development and health initiatives, according to the organization. It continues to provide supplies and resources to families throughout the school year.
