Heavy rain, gusty winds spreading across parts of the Big Island and Maui

(Update: 11 p.m. HST Sunday, Aug. 23, 2026) At 11 p.m. HST, the center of Tropical Depression Moke was located about 380 miles SW of Hilo, Hawaiʻi, near latitude 15.3 North, longitude 158.6 West. The depression is moving toward the west near 13 mph, and this general motion is expected to continue during the next day or two, according to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.

On the forecast track, the center of Moke will pass southwest of the Big Island of Hawaiʻi overnight and well south of the smaller main Hawaiian Islands on Monday, the CPHC reports.

Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph with higher gusts. Weakening is expected, and Moke is forecast to degenerate to a remnant low pressure area by late Monday and dissipate on Tuesday.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 1004 mb (29.65 inches). NOAA buoy 51002 to the north-northeast of Moke recently reported a sustained wind of 31 mph and a gust of 36 mph.

WIND: Gusty winds are likely across the Hawaiian Islands during the next day or two, especially in areas of high terrain.

RAINFALL: Tropical Depression Moke is expected to produce additional rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches through Monday across the Big Island. Rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches of rain are expected over eastern Maui. These rainfall amounts may produce life-threatening flooding and mudslides for the windward and southeast Big Island, especially in steep terrain and over areas that were affected recently by Lala. Across western Maui and the remainder of the islands, Tropical Depression Moke may produce up to 1 or 2 inches of rain.
