Wildland fire burns half acre of brush in Kīhei

An estimated half acre of brush burned in an area between East Līpoa Street and Hale Kūʻai Street in Kīhei on Friday afternoon, Sept. 4, 2026. The fire was reported at around 1:31 p.m., in an area behind multiple businesses.

Some businesses along Hale Kūʻai Street were evacuated for a short time as a precaution, according to fire officials.

Firefighters were able to quickly contain the fire to the brush area. The fire was brought under control at 1:53 p.m, and extinguished at 3:49 p.m. The cause of fire was undetermined.

Responding units included Engine 6, Ladder 14, Tanker 14, Engine 1, Mini 1, Tanker 10, a battalion chief and a fire investigator.

No injuries were reported. Fire officials say some kayaks stored in the area were damaged or destroyed, but no dollar loss amount is currently available.

Weather on site included winds blowing from the east at 5-10 mph, and 89 degree temperatures.
