The campaign to elect Carol Lee Kamekona to the Kahului seat on the Maui County Council will host a “Voter Jam w/ Auntie Carol” event from 6 to 11 p.m. Sept. 17 at da Playground Maui. The event blends a “Rock the Vote” style civics education party with a lineup of local entertainment.
The Voter Jam will feature live music, local comedy and conversations about the future of Maui County, event organizers said in an announcement.
The entertainment lineup is headlined by Rootz N Creation, featuring renowned roots reggae and vocal artist Kokomon, and will include a lively kani ka pila session featuring Kaniloa. In addition to the music, attendees will be treated to a stand-up comedy showcase featuring Maui’s Chino LaForge, Ted Anderson, Ivan Natanson and Chuck Thompson.
Beyond the entertainment, the Voter Jam serves as a civic action hub. Attendees will have the opportunity to talk story with the candidate and learn how the Maui County Council impacts their daily lives.
The event will focus on Kamekona’s core legislative priorities, including enforcement of residential zoning laws to keep housing affordable for local workers, her push to reclaim public control over Maui’s water systems and her commitment to bringing discipline and transparency to the county budget, her campaign said.
“Our campaign is about returning power to the people who actually live, work, and raise their families on this island,” said Kamekona, a retired 22-year US Navy veteran, mother of seven, and longtime community organizer. “I’ve always believed that policy must work at the kitchen table, not just on a government spreadsheet. The Voter Jam is a chance for our community to come together, celebrate our island’s incredible talent, and get informed about how we can take our future back.”
Kamekona said she refuses to accept funding from corporate developers or big special interests, so her campaign relies entirely on grassroots support. All proceeds from the event will go directly toward funding the campaign’s final push through the November election.
